REALISM

The title makes it clear that what is meant is a way of painting when the drawing is as close to the reference as possible.

Realism requires great skills and technique, and of course lots of practicing.

If this style is relatable to you, and you want to work in it, then you need a basic knowledge of human anatomy and proportions, as well as constructing objects, perspective and chiaroscuro.

Academic and life drawing help a lot to sharpen all these skills.

SEMI-REALISM

There is also such a concept as semi-realism.

That means drawing in a pretty realistic, but stylized manner.

The style is preferred by artists who mostly draw portrait illustrations, looks from fashion shows and those who like detailing.

It can also include surrealistic or fantasy illustrations with more or less realistic features.

DECORATIVE STYLE

This style is a mix of realism and conditionality.

That involves realistic drawing of some elements and flat color filling of others.
Usually such drawings are supplemented with floral or any other decorative patterns.

It is suitable for magazine and book illustrations, and requires precision, knowledge of anatomy and such skills as color combination and lining.
Alphonse Mucha is considered to be the father of this style!

FLAT AND MINIMALISM

Minimalism is a style that means maximum simplification of the elements of the depicted object, “flat” color filling that excludes chiaroscuro or involves simplified shadows and highlights on the drawing or even a full absence of perspective!

Some objects of the illustration can be represented by just a line or a colored spot and occasional texture adding.

The style is really neat, which means there is no place for sketch sloppiness.

It is very popular in magazine illustration and is often used by web and motion designers!

The style can be combined and complemented with others, such as grotesque, naïve and decorative realism!

GROTESQUE

Grotesque is a well known, slightly surreal style of illustration.

This art style is based on the distortion of a depicted object or of the whole picture.

Main features here are highly distorted, hyperbolized or deliberately reduced proportions of objects and perspective.

For such, it is extremely important to keep the balance in composition, plasticity and stylistics of the whole illustration.

The style goes well with both minimalism and decorative style! It requires experience, knowledge of form and plasticity of figures, great lining skills, and don’t forget about your rich imagination!

“VANISH” TECHNIQUE

One of the most well-known styles that can be combined with all of the above.

This style is usually used for drawing portraits and fashion show looks and includes great face detailing and portrait similarity, but on the other hand intentional incompleteness. Images seem to blend in the background, faces are overly bright, or with just a half of the face clear and the other partially missing, some body parts are underdrawn. Lining and clothing look is stylized, with occasional colored spots.

Such illustrations seem light and sometimes unfinished, but this impression is misleading!

They look really bright when done in watercolor, ink, markers or pastel, but digital works well too!

QUICK SKETCH

Expressive, dynamic, light and fresh-looking - such sketches always catch everyone's eye!

The main task here is to recreate the look without overly detailing it. It is important to convey the overall impression and the essence of what you are drawing!

To master this technique, you must set yourself a specific time frame, like 5 to 10 minutes for each sketch.

The models don't have much time to pose long in front of the artist at fashion shows, it is necessary to capture the image as quickly as possible, so you can finish drawing some smaller details afterwards!

This style is better done in digital, but traditional marker, pencil and watercolor techniques work great if you're good enough with those!

LET’S SUMMARIZE:

As you can see, there is a huge variety of styles of fashion illustration. It is definitely not easy to form your own style quickly, but the aim is to try as many different directions and techniques as possible.

Search for new inspiring references, check other illustrators’ works and current trends, and raise your watchfulness.

It is important to understand that a unique style is not formed in one day or one work, that means restructuring of your perception and practicing new skills.
